Factor Concepts

What are factors?

Numbers that divide evenly into the given number with no remainder.

Prime Factorization:

Breaking down a number into its prime number components.

Perfect Numbers:

Numbers equal to the sum of their proper divisors (excluding themselves).

Factor Rules

• 1 and the number itself are always factors
• Even numbers are divisible by 2
• If sum of digits is divisible by 3, so is the number
• Numbers ending in 0 or 5 are divisible by 5

Understanding Factors

What are Factors?

Factors are whole numbers that divide evenly into another number. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

Prime vs Composite

Prime numbers have exactly two factors (1 and themselves). Composite numbers have more than two factors and can be factored further.

Factor Pairs

Factor pairs are two numbers that multiply together to give the original number. For 12: (1,12), (2,6), (3,4) are all factor pairs.

Applications

Factors are used in simplifying fractions, finding GCD/LCM, cryptography, solving equations, and organizing objects into groups.
