Exponent Rules

a^m × a^n = a^(m+n)
a^m ÷ a^n = a^(m-n)
(a^m)^n = a^(m×n)
a^0 = 1 (if a ≠ 0)
a^(-n) = 1/a^n
a^(1/n) = ⁿ√a
a^(m/n) = ⁿ√(a^m)

Understanding Exponents

Basic Exponents

An exponent tells how many times to multiply the base by itself. For example, 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.

Negative Exponents

A negative exponent means "take the reciprocal and make the exponent positive". For example, 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8.

Fractional Exponents

A fractional exponent represents roots. a^(m/n) = ⁿ√(a^m). For example, 8^(2/3) = ³√(8²) = ³√64 = 4.

Scientific Notation

Scientific notation expresses large or small numbers as a × 10^b, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 and b is an integer.
